 2008 FISHING REPORTS

Hi Mike,  07/12/2008

Man! It's tough to get those tautog these days. It's not like it was for the last couple of years.

Fishing Two-Mile Rock, it may be an hour before you get a keeper, and I don't mean that you have to go through a lot of undersized fish to get to them. It seems that there is an absence of even undersized fish.

There are some large scup out there. Scup to 17-1/2 inches are being taken, however, it's not steady fishing either. They're there, then they're gone.

It seems to be on the slow side for stripers also, but there are numbers of bluefish moving in, and out.

Haven't seen too many people going for fluke. In fact, the harbor, and river, have been on the quiet side.

The water temperatures in this area appear to be slowly moving toward the 60 degree mark. Water temperatures in the eastern portion of Buzzards Bay have been about 5 degrees higher, and may be the reason that all of the species are more obtainable in that area.

That's it.

Hope you have a Happy Father's Day!

Hi Mike,

There doesn't appear to be too many big bass around, as has been reported by numerous sources. I've been told that the 51 pounder, taken a couple of weeks ago, was taken in front of the Back Eddy Restaurant. There have been a number of boats chunking in that area, but the results seem to be limited to mostly schoolie bass.

John Savasta has been taking just legal bass (29" - 30"), and releasing them. He's waiting for a big one.

He did report, as have others, that there are good sized blues (15 lb. club) just outside of the harbor.

Tautog fishing has been slow outside of the harbor, and it takes awhile to get a keeper. I did hear that descent sized tautog had been taken from the Hix Bridge area. John Savasta has been taking a few tautog from his houseboat, but only when the tide slacks off.

Fluke have moved into the river, because it has been reported that the people fishing from the Westport Town Docks, have been catching fluke, and keeping them, even though the fluke season doesn't start until this coming Sunday, June 10th. I had also heard some radio chatter about boats fishing for fluke. I can't believe how dumb people are. You'd think that they would check the regulations before going fishing.

It seems that at the moment, that anyone wanting sea bass, or scup, should try the eastern end of Buzzards Bay. I'm hearing that there are jumbos of both species being taken there.

Let me know when you can go fishing.

Hi Mike,

How are things with you, and the family?

Will you be going up to Maine this June?

Tautog fishing has been on the slow side - for me anyway. Very few tautog outside of the Westport River. Only within the last few weeks has there been an increase in the number of small tog. Keepers are far, and few. As I said, for me anyway.

John Savasta on the other hand, is lucky enough to have a houseboat on the river, so his fishing time is somewhat greater than the time I have. John, and his wife Christine, have been fishing off of the stern of their houseboat, usually with a libation in hand, and have been taking their limit of tog during the course of the afternoon tides, as well as keeper scup. Now that's the way to fish!

Striper fishing has been on the slow side, with guys mainly taking schoolie bass in the river. Bob Lachapelle, and his cousin Joe Berube, have been taking a few keeper bass, and many shorts, using their umbrella rigs. Bob did take a nice keeper at Hens-and-Chickens reef yesterday, as well as a keeper fluke.

Bob also indicated that there was a fair amount of shad in the river, also.

One of the local divers said that there are good numbers of fluke in the river.

I did catch a small bluefish on Sunday. He followed my sandworm on the retrieve.

One of the boaters, coming into the river on Saturday, said that they had caught a nice sized sea bass (he didn't indicate that there were a lot), and some tog, out at the Pine-Tree Ground.

Well, that's about it.

Let me know when you'll be available to go fishing.

Hi Mike,

Well, this weather is putting a damper on the fishing in, and around, Westport.

Because of an appointment to do some work on my truck (they ordered the wrong part anyway), I couldn't spend much time fishing on Saturday. Because of the weather, I opted to fish from the dock, and caught zip.

On Sunday, the wind had picked up, so I scrubbed my plans to go out on the boat, but fished from the dock instead. Caught four flounder, from 12 inches to 15-1/2 inches.

Last weekend, some of the commercial guys were doing well on tautog at Cracked Rock, in the Westport River. But, as the tide picked up, that slacked off.

Heard from the guys who went up to New Hampshire (the Berubes, Lachapelles, et al). George Berube caught a three pound land-locked salmon, but released it, as it was loaded with eggs. He then caught a nice trout, but I don't know the particulars.

Well, that's about it. Let me know when you can go fishing.
